You might blame it on the popularity of the hit TV series Mad Men, but one of the latest interior design trends is the return of mid-century modern furniture. Major furniture chains are now carrying an abundance of this style; however, not all of the pieces are necessarily true and accurate reproduction of the time period. Prices follow popularity, so expect prices to be higher for the top quality pieces.  When looking for a genuine mid-century modern piece, here are three key elements to keep in mind:

  • The type of wood used. Generally, furniture of this period was made from solid teak, rosewood, or walnut.
  • Seamless construction. This means that the wood was typically fitted together without the use of nails or screws, and many of the joints flow from one element into the next without a break in line or form.
  • The finish. Most mid-century pieces have a natural finish (actually called a “Danish Oil” finish, after the Danish makers who popularized it) to maintain the beauty of the wood, but you may also find solid black finish on occasion.

Whether you’re looking for a trendy mid-century modern piece of furniture or prefer a more timeless and classic look, I can create furniture “art” of any style. To learn more, please contact me, Richard Oedel, Fine Furniture Master.
