While the 2013 holiday season may still be on your mind, now is the perfect time to start thinking about what to get for that special someone for the 2014 holiday season. No, I’m not talking about taking advantage of the huge post holiday discounts on apparel and electronics at the local department store. Instead, I’m referring to thinking about a truly unique gift that will show that special someone in your life that you really took the time when selecting something for him or her. An excellent way to accomplish this is commissioning a piece of furniture.

As you can imagine, commissioning a piece of furniture takes time, which is why we recommend that our clients start the process now. The eight furniture craftsmen that make up Fort Point Cabinetmakers specialize in the design and building of fine furniture, cabinetry, and custom woodwork in general. When commissioning a piece of custom furniture through Fort Point Cabinetmakers, you will typically work with one of our craftsmen; however, depending on the project, each craftsman has the ability to bring in another member of our cooperative to complete the project to your specifications.

I like to help my clients feel completely comfortable with the furniture commissioning process, which is why we do a lot of talking and looking at images and exploring various materials for inspiration. After I gain an understanding of what you are looking for, I will draw up some sketches and ask for your feedback. By keeping an open stream of communication with my clients, I have been able to create a number of pieces throughout my career that have exceeded my clients’ expectations.

To learn more about the commissioning process and why now is the perfect time to start, please contact me, Richard Oedel, Fine Furniture Master: 617-763-1349.
