Invite a Little Victorian Style Into Your Furniture Collection

I use my design blog as a resource for those considering commissioning a piece of furniture, and I often discuss a variety of styles to help offer some inspiration.

If you take a look through my online portfolio, you will see that I have experience in creating fine custom furniture in a variety of styles. One style that I wanted to take a moment to touch on is the Victorian style.

When you hear people refer to the Victorian Era, they are talking about the 1830s through the early 1900s when Queen Victoria ruled England. She is recognized for identifying herself with the middle class, which heavily influenced a number of aspects during this era, particularly with the furniture that was made during this time period.

As the middle class grew during the Victorian Era, people began moving from the country to the city and wanted not only to acquire wealth, but show it off. People of this era wanted to fill their homes with furniture as they felt it was a way to show off their wealthy status to peers.

There are certain features that help define Victorian furniture, and outlined below are some of the characteristics that are frequently seen with furniture from this era:

  • Generally overbearing and over-sized
  • Upholstery plush and heavy
  • Intricate carvings – search for Belter or Herter furniture to get an idea
  • Heavy embellishments and ornamentation
  • Made of dark wood such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut
