CALL FOR PROPOSALS Deadline: September 15, 2009 Fusions: Minds & Hands Shaping Our Futures Furniture Society
Conference 2010 June 16 – 19 Massachusetts
Institute of Technology The Host Conference Committee seeks proposals for the
three-day event -- panel discussion topics, artists’ presentations,
demonstrations and workshops -- relating to the theme of Fusions: Minds & Hands Shaping Our Future. The following
organizational tracks build on the theme and are key to developing proposals. Mind & Hand Connections. How are designs conceived in the mind successfully fulfilled in the workshop? What does it mean and how does it feel to live by one’s hands in a society that values the mind more highly than the hand? Inspiration from the Past. What has the past to tell us about our future? What inspiration do contemporary makers gain from the designs, craftsmanship and business models of historical masters? What connects the work of past centuries to the present? Technology Edge. What are the latest technological advances in the furniture field? How do we learn about new technology and integrate it into our practices? Do methods of industry apply to one-of-a-kind and/or limited production? Going Green. What does it mean for materials, processes and products to be “Green”? What qualifies furniture as being environmentally responsible and sustainable? How does “going green” affect both the maker and the consumer? Forward Furniture! How can we as furniture makers, designers, educators, curators and collectors plan for the future? How do we discern trend from fad? What common values drive us forward? Proposals, due
September 15, 2009, should state concisely the format and content of the
presentation being proposed, how it relates to the theme overall and
specifically how it relates to one or more of the key organizational tracks.
