One of the more popular trends in furniture today is the mid-century modern style as people tend to love their fine lines and natural hues. Even with a more traditional style you can still add a retro touch to your home with mid-century modern furniture — without going overboard.

Much of the wood furniture from this time period was made of teak, and people still love this material today as a simple finish can be applied to showcase the natural wood. In fact, the mid-century style often lets the wood have the starring role, paring it with neutral colored walls and soft-hued fabrics. Later, when teak became more scarce and expensive, cherry took its place in many designs.

A lot of people, especially designers, like to say that “less is more,” and the mid-century style embodies that philosophy. This is why you’ll often see furniture from this time period possess only what is needed to function. For example, a round table designed in this style may just have one leg supporting the table rather than several.

Another characteristic of mid-century modern furniture is its lack of ornamentation, which again goes along with the minimalist philosophy. This helps to contribute towards the feel of an uncluttered space that is not only functional, but clean as well.

I’ve had the opportunity to design several mid-century modern pieces for my clients. Please contact me to discuss your specific style and help you get on your way commissioning a piece of furniture from me.
