Some of my readers have the misconception that many of the furniture exhibitions happening around New England are specifically to highlight traditional, antique furniture. This is not the case at all as there are a number of exhibits that also focus on a more modern and contemporary style of furniture.

If you appreciate modern American furniture design, you will want to be sure to attend the Schools of Thought II: East Coast Contemporaries Exhibit, which runs June 12 through September 8 at the New Hampshire Furniture Masters Gallery in Concord, New Hampshire.

The East Coast is home to three of the finest programs for contemporary studio furniture: Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and Boston University. Many of these programs were developed after World War II due to the growing interest in American Craft at that time.

Through this exhibit, the New Hampshire Furniture Masters will take a look at the work created by several graduates of these renowned design programs to see how their education has shaped their development as artists. The graduates of these programs have really helped to break through the constraints of traditional American furniture design and influence what we now know as contemporary studio furniture.

The exhibit is free to attend, and there will be an opening reception at the gallery on July 11th from 5-7pm.
