How to Care for Fine Oak Wood Furniture

If you’re looking for a truly unique piece of furniture for your home, why not consider one made of oak? This beautiful, strong wood has been used since the Middle Ages for the construction of fine furniture, and if it’s cared for properly, oak furniture can last for many generations to come.

When it comes to caring for oak furniture, I always recommend the following to my clients:

  • Always use coasters and cloths to prevent unwanted stains and markings.
  • If a stain does occur, take the steps to remove it as soon as possible. Do this simply by dampening (NOT soaking) a cloth with mineral spirits (paint thinner will do) to rub away the spot.  If not, don’t wait, call and get it worked on right away.  It will not get better on its own.
  • Make a habit of cleaning the oak regularly (at least once a month) with a high quality cloth and a good quality furniture cleaner – I use Howards Feed and Wax – I get nothing from this, but the product is GOOD.
  • If a chip or other issue occur, contact a reliable oak specialist immediately to address this. I have a lot of experience in working with woods and would be glad to assist you, but I generally give the repair work to professionals who spend their lives restoring furniture.
