When commissioning a piece of furniture, it’s important that you take the time to research the pros and cons of the various materials that your furniture could be crafted from. I often use my design blog to touch on these different materials to provide you with some food for thought, and today I want to highlight Poplar.

Since I recently talked about how American hardwoods are some of the most sustainable materials to craft furniture from, it only seems appropriate that we talk about Poplar. This tree is very common throughout the Eastern US and can tower as high as 150 feet. Poplar sapwood is a creamy white while the heartwood can vary from a pale yellowish brown to an olive green. For those looking for a more unified texture, Poplar is a great choice.

I personally enjoy working with Poplar as it is versatile, stains exceptionally well, and offers good strength and stability. In addition to being used to make furniture, we often see Poplar used to make kitchen cabinets, moulding, trim, paneling, and carvings, and it’s likely a popular material choice due to the reasons that I just mentioned.

As you are contemplating commissioning a piece of furniture, I invite you to contact me, Richard Oedel, Fine Furniture Master, to discuss some different materials that you may want to consider. I want my clients to be completely satisfied with their furniture, and I find that taking the time to talk things through and explore different options is one of the best ways to accomplish this.
