Reclaiming Past Glories: No Wood Is a Lost Cause

It’s easy to get caught up in all of the quality wood options during the commissioning process. However, one thing that my clients should also consider for their custom piece is using reclaimed wood. Besides being environmentally friendly, using reclaimed wood can also mean that your piece is more durable, as it tends to come from older trees rather than newly planted forests. It also is easier to create a more antique look with furniture made from this type of wood.

Of course, with reclaimed wood, you’re more likely to have imperfections on the individual boards, much like the ones from this project. As you can see, part of my process for crafting the new piece is to identify and eliminate the “stand-outs” that would otherwise be an eyesore. Then each board is straightened, fitted and sealed together to create a unified surface. From the final viewing of the table, you may not be able to tell the true nature of the individual parts, but the piece feels warm and rich.

Starting the process can be overwhelming, but the results are definitely worth while. If you’ve been having a difficult time deciding the look, feel and general makeup of your piece, let me help.
