Hand in the Craft: Opportunities to Learn About Furniture and Cabinet Making

Have you ever been interested in learning more about the craft of furniture making? If you’ve had a chance to check out some of the furniture exhibits happening around New England and are inspired to learn more (and perhaps have your own hand in the craft), North Bennet Street School (NBSS) in Boston is a fantastic place to do this.

North Bennet Street School is recognized as being one of the premier woodworking schools in the country, offering an extensive 2-year furniture and cabinet making program that teaches the values and craft of fine furniture making. This program is ideal for anyone that wants a hands-on experience and shares a passion for materials. It will teach students to problem solve and think outside-of-the-box when it comes to building, repairing, and reproducing fine furniture and cabinetry.

Since hand skills and woodworking techniques are the foundation of the furniture and cabinet making program at North Bennet Street School, the students will be asked to design and construct a chair, table, and another piece of furniture that embrace the design principles of 18th and 19th century furniture. With each project that the students take on, they will be challenging themselves by testing out new techniques and skills. If you’re just looking to get a sample of woodworking, then NBSS also offers stand-alone workshops.

Being a graduate of North Bennet Street School, I personally am an advocate for their teachings. I encourage anyone that has an interest in learning more about the furniture making craft to check out this well respected program. To learn more about this program and the admission process, please contact North Bennet Street School. You can also contact me, Richard Oedel, fine furniture maker in Boston.
