Go Inside the History of New England Furniture This Fall
The fall season offers a number of reasons to explore Massachusetts. As you begin filling up your calendar for the months ahead, consider checking out some of the furniture exhibits in New England. While they will provide you with a great opportunity to learn a little more about the history of our region, these furniture exhibits are also worth checking out if you are considering commissioning a piece of furniture.
Introduction to New England Furniture will be taking place on Saturday, November 15, 2014 from 9:30am to 4:30pm at the Haverhill Facility in Historic New England. Attendees will hear from Nancy Carlisle, Historic New England Senior Curator, and Peter Follansbee of Plimoth Plantation as they walk through the history of furniture in New England during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and mid-nineteenth centuries.
Topics covered will include the variety of furniture styles used in the region, changing stop practices, change in consumer demand, craftsmanship, and the type of technology used at the time. For those that appreciate a hands-on experience, Peter Follansbee will demonstrate some of the more common furniture making techniques that were used during the seventeenth century. Attendees will also have the opportunity to see a number of the pieces of furniture up close from Historic New England’s collection for inspiration.
Registration is required to attend this exhibit, and you can call 617-994-6678 to reserve your spot.
