There are so many things to consider when shopping for wood furniture, but something that should always be top of mind is quality. Because it can sometimes be difficult to differentiate between a high quality wooden piece and one made from a lower grade of material, I wanted to share some of the best indicators of quality that I always tell my clients to look for:

  • The source of wood. Wood furniture is generally classified into three categories: hard, soft, and engineered. These factors play an important role in how long your furniture will last and how well it will blend with your lifestyle. While hard wood pieces are hard to come by, they typically represent the best quality pieces.
  • The way the furniture is constructed. Generally speaking, mortise and tenon and dovetails offer the strongest joints and highest quality construction. It’s also important to note that solid construction often includes dowels and screws, but never staples.
  • The finish. The construction of all wood furniture should include sanding, staining, and finishing. A high quality finish includes one that is a smooth satin and free of rough spots and bubbles.
